Tata Tigor Diesel Long Term Review Part One — Has Tata Done It Right?

  • Tata Tigor Diesel Long Term Review Part One — Has Tata Done It Right?

The key to the car was handed over to us last month and I have been driving it around the city and the highway without any fuss. It's been over a month and there have been no issues with the car. Definitely, I would say that the Tigor is one of the most-affordable compact-sedans available in the market.

So, when I went to pick Abijith up from the airport as mentioned above, he had a ton of luggage with him and that is where the 419-litre boot space came handy. All his equipment along with his luggage perfectly fit in the boot.

We were leaving for Pune - a three-hour drive from Mumbai. After fuelling up the 35-litre tank, we started our journey. At first, for a few kilometres the journey was comfortable. But then I realized that the seats, although looking good, needed a bit more cushioning. Upon asking my colleague he also had the same to tell.

Powering the car is a 1.05-litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that makes 69bhp and 140Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The clutch on the Tigor feels light and does not stress you out in stop-and-go traffic. The car takes time to build up speed. But while driving, I realized that the sweet spot to cruise is when you keep the engine speed between 2500 - 3000rpm.

To my surprise, the car was giving an excellent mileage of 17.1km/l in the city and 24.6km/l on the highway. There is also an Eco mode on offer which allows the car to be more fuel efficient, but on the contrary, you lose that crisp throttle response.

Other things that caught my attention was the eight-speaker Harman sound system which is brilliant for a car at this price point. The A/C works excellently and cools the cabin down immediately. There is also a rear-view parking camera. The steering mounted controls further adds convenience. The touchscreen feels a bit outdated and could have been better.

As of now, I have done 2000 kms on the car and haven't faced any issues. The Tigor seemed to have very less maintenance. The cabin feels a bit noisy from inside as expected from a diesel car. The ride quality overall is impressive but the suspension feels a bit on the stiffer side. I will talk more about the car in my second report. Till then, stay tuned to DriveSpark for more information.

Tata Motors has been making affordable and reliable cars for a long time. So, when they called us saying that they had the Tigor diesel on offer for a long-term basis, we could not say a no. We were already really impressed with the car when we drove it at the first drive and now we get to keep it for a couple of months.
