Good Returns | 12th Jun, 2019 04:27 PM

According to a recent study, the second cheapest place in the world to hire a taxi is India.

A study by Amsterdam-based taxi2airport.com showed that Egypt has the cheapest taxi fare in the world at €0.84 (around Rs 66) for a 5 km ride. It was followed by India, where a taxi ride would cost €1.29 (around Rs 102) for the same distance. Third and fourth on the list were Thailand and Indonesia at €1.41 (around Rs 111) and €1.68 (around Rs 132), respectively.

The study further said that the base fee for taxi fare in Egypt can be as low as €0.24. A cab in Malaysia and Mexico for a 5 km ride will cost less than €2, ranking them fifth and sixth on the list.

The top ten countries with cheapest taxi fares included Turkey (€2.24), China (€2.41), Argentina (€2.44) and Vietnam (€2.47).

On the other end of the spectrum, taxis in Switzerland are the most expensive in the world at €22.68 for 5 kms, followed by Japan (€15.64) and Germany (€13.80).

The research was commissioned by taxi2airport.com, an online booking website for airport transfers worldwide. The list was compiled to help travellers get an estimate of the taxi fares around the world.
