  • Gujarat Government Reduces Traffic Fines By Up To 50 Percent Lower Than The Motor Vehicle Act

The new rules increased traffic violation fines by up to ten times in most states across India. Gujarat too was one of the states that the new rules were implemented in. However, the state government of Gujarat has now opted out of the new penalty structure and has come up with fines of its own for a few offences.

This has been done to give motorists more time to get acquainted with the new rules. Under the new Motor Vehicle Act, the fine for not wearing a helmet is Rs 1,000 but the Gujarat government has capped it at Rs 500.

The penalty for not wearing seatbelts too has been changed from Rs 1,00 to Rs 500. Riding or driving without a license is an offence under which the violator should be fined Rs 5,000 under the motor vehicle amendment act.

The Gujarat government however has decided to cap the penalty at Rs 2,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 3,000 for four-wheelers and commercial vehicles. Riding/driving without carrying insurance, pollution certificate, license, registration certificate, etc, will entail a fine of Rs 500 for the first instance and Rs 1,000 for the second instance just like in the motor vehicle amendment act.

The new rules state that triple-riding on two-wheelers should be penalised with Rs 1,000 but the Gujarat government has capped it at just Rs 100. Driving a vehicle without a pollution under control certificate in Gujarat amounts to a fine of rs 2,000 for small vehicles and Rs 3,000 for large vehicles as opposed to the Rs 10,000 under the new motor vehicle act.

Vijay Rupani, the Chief Minister of Gujarat said that the fines laid out in the new act were the maximum suggested and the state government had reduced them after detailed deliberations. He also suggested that his government is not being lenient by reducing the fines as some of the penalties are still around 10 times higher than the fines charged before the new act.

Thoughts On Traffic Fines In Gujarat Being Reduced By Upto 50 Percent

The state government in Gujarat has taken steps that most people across the country desire right now. The new penalties implemented across the nation have got on the nerves of many citizens as they are too high.

However, the number of traffic violations in urban areas and major metros has dropped drastically and this is only because of the penalties being levied on violators.

The state government in gujarat has reduced the newly implemented traffic fines by up to 50 percent. The change in the penalties structure comes just a few days after the new motor vehicles amendment act was implemented in India.
