FASTag Implementation Will Enable Seamless Movement Of Vehicles Across India: SIAM
DriveSpark | 2nd Dec, 2019 03:03 PM

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), supports the (MoRTH) Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for making the use of FASTags at tollgates across all highways mandatory across the country from 15 December 2019.

The Society of India Automobile Manufacturers has played an important role, along with Government of India, to ensure FASTags are brought to the forefront of the tolling system in the country.

One mission that was recently accomplished was the fitment of FASTags for new passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks, sold from 1 December 2017 onward at the automotive dealers end.

Over six million FASTags have been issued until recently. This ensured growth in FASTags transactions at all toll plazas across the national highway network in the country. SIAM says that FASTag is an important steps taken by the Government of India in order to achieve is 'Digital India' goal.

Mr Rajan Wadhera, the President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said, "One hundred percent implementation of FASTags would have several economic and environmental benefits in the road transportation sector with seamless movement through the toll plazas, thereby ensuring faster turnaround time for movement of goods & passengers and improving overall transportation efficiency."

SIAM believes that once FASTags have been fully implemented, it will result in a seamless movement of traffic, and will reduce time spent at toll gates. The Society has been campaigning across the country with the aim of issuing FASTags at all toll plazas. The idea is to have every vehicle, old and new, run on these tags.

The Government is also doing its bit to ensure that citizens switch from cash to FASTags, and announced recently that the initial deadline for mandatory implementation of the tags had been moved to 15 December from the original 1 December deadline.

The idea behind moving the deadline was to ensure that all citizen have enough of time to get their vehicles tagged. The government has also recruited banks where one can buy a FASTag, and have opened multiple methods of payment to recharge the FASTags. Users can now recharge via debit and credit cards, net banking, and or the UPI way.

Thoughts About SIAM Supporting The FASTag Mandate

Good. The government and the auto industry have to work in tandem if things like FASTag-ging have to be implemented, and they seem to be achieving this goal. There is no real-time information about the number of vehicles that still need to be tagged, and if the additional 15 day period will be enough though.
